Threat of impeachment: Presidency attacks opposition senators while Lai Mohammed adopts a conciliatory tone

The presidency has called "ridiculous" the threat by opposition senators to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari if he does not control the deteriorating security situation across the country.

Senators from opposition political parties staged a Senate plenary walkout on Wednesday after Senate Speaker Ahmad Lawan refused to engage in discussion on a motion calling on Buhari to improve the situation safe in six weeks or be impeached.

Killings and kidnappings have become the norm in many parts of Nigeria under Mr. Buhari.

After their walkout, the aggrieved lawmakers told reporters they had agreed with their colleagues from the ruling APC party in a closed session that the president would receive the six-week ultimatum.

Replying in a statement late Wednesday, presidential spokesman Garba Shehu called the actions of opposition lawmakers “babyness” and the impeachment motion “ridiculous.”

"Despite the performative and childish antics of these senators staging a walkout, Senate Speaker Ahmad Lawan's refusal on Wednesday to accept the ridiculous motion to impeach our president was entirely appropriate and correct," Mr. Shehu wrote.

"Rather than mocking voters by trying to emulate what they see in America, the opposition would be well advised to devote its time to tackling the pressing issues facing Nigerians, such as the current global cost of living crisis.

"Their persistent failure to do so is part of why they remain in opposition.

“In contrast, the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to finding lasting solutions to emerging security threats, including those left by the PDP in the South-South, North-East and across the federation. . In the past 24 hours, two more girls from Chibok have been released, in addition to the three brought home last week. »

Mr. Shehu described the lawmakers' action as "headline-grabbing stunts" for which the opposition is now well known.

"We would like to respectfully remind them that these are the same voters they were elected to serve and are being paid to do so with public money.
