A four-day break in Italy, two in Rome and two in the Umbrian countryside, seemed like a good idea when I booked it.

Less because the date was approaching and UK airports seemed to be drowning in a tsunami of passengers desperate for holiday but faced with understaffing, long delays and lost luggage.

Despite my wife's protests (she likes to pack a good wardrobe travelling), we decided to take hand luggage only.

It turned out to be a solid choice as we bypassed the scary queues to drop off the bags and lucked out with security - only 25 minutes from the airport entrance to at the departures hall.

Our fortune held the BA flight at the end of May, although full and 45 minutes late to take off, catch up time and landing only 15 minutes late.
