Chief Senate Whip Orji Uzor Kalu has declared his intention to run for Senate Speaker in the 10th National Assembly.

Kalu, who was re-elected to represent Abia North in the Red Chamber, was the first contender to declare his interest in the country's number three position

He made the statement during a briefing to journalists at the National Assembly compound on Tuesday in Abuja.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has maintained its majority in the Senate, securing 57 seats to date.

CPA senators vying for the presidency of the Senate have been lobbying their colleagues for support.

Other senior senators considering the position are Sani Musa (Niger), Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Barau Jibrin (Kano) and Dave Umahi (Ebonyi).

The party should announce its position at any time from now on.

The APC leadership said it has not assigned the Senate presidency to any part of the country.

Kalu told reporters that it was his turn to become Senate Speaker being a high-ranking lawmaker and a native of the Southeast.

He also said he would not be comfortable with the Muslim Senate presidency in the 10th, saying that choosing a Christian senate president would ensure political balance and give other religions based on fate a sense of belonging.

He said, "If I am elected President of the Senate, I will be part of the Nigeria team. I will work for all corners of Nigeria.

"I was schooled in Maiduguri, Borno State. I started my business in Lagos and have expanded to all the state capitals. My name will be Nigeria team , my last name will be Nigeria team.

“Remember that I am the only former governor who never changed my phone line more than 20 years ago.

"I am always ready to keep this phone number to answer all my calls. I will not turn off my phones because I am President of the Senate.

“I hope Nigerians will pray that I become President of the Senate because it is my turn.”
