Jonathan's men begin the mobilization for Tinubu

Supporters of former President Goodluck Jonathan have started popular mobilization in the Southeast and South-South geopolitical zones for All Progressives Congress presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The group, under the Citizens Network for Peace and Development in Nigeria, had previously endorsed Tinubu in November.

In a statement released after the grassroots campaign began in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, coalition national secretary Francis Wainwei revealed that they were against the idea of having another northerner to replace the president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired) after eight years.

Wainwei, whose group made a cash donation of 1 million naira to support Tinubu's campaign in the two geopolitical zones, pledged to do everything possible to ensure that the next president emerges from the South.

The CNPDN was among the few coalitions that openly pushed Jonathan to run for the presidential ticket on the APC platform earlier this year.

Jonathan, who had promised to consult widely during preparation, reneged at the last minute, clearing the way for Tinubu to land the party ticket.

But Wainwei, an indigene of Bayelsa state, told reporters on Monday that their supporters had decided unanimously to back Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.

According to him, the main reason the group supported a presidential candidate from the South was to promote national unity, equity, fairness and justice.

The statement reads: "Our position that the next president of this country should come from the South is guided by the same vision and the same principles. We firmly believe that this will strengthen the unity and peace of the nation. This will give a better sense of belonging to the people of Southern Nigeria and promote a more viable peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.

"We were surprised by the betrayal of the same cause by some of the southern governors, especially the south-south governors, with the exception of Nyesom Wike, who had previously declared for a southern president, to abandon it and began to pursue personal interests instead of the collective interest of the region.

“We therefore call on those South-South governors who have betrayed their people by backing another northern candidate to succeed Buhari after eight years of a northern president, to step down immediately.

"This is because the inhabitants of the South-South zone can no longer entrust their common heritage to them because they have placed their personal interests above the collective interest of their people.

“Our call for their resignation is also based on the fact that they recently received huge sums of money through the 13% diversion fund and wasted it in pursuit of their personal interests. at the expense of their people.

“We also call on the South-South State Houses of Assembly to remove said Governors if they do not resign as requested. We will mobilize our membership across South-South States to force said Governors to resign or to be impeached.

"We can no longer allow such selfish governors to continue to govern us. We must all place the collective interest of our people above our personal interests for our region to experience holistic and accelerated development."

"Tinubu is the easiest way to elect a Southern-born President in 2023. He is accepted nationwide and has the political experience required to lead Nigeria to greatness as President of Nigeria ."
