Judge absent from trial of Peter Obi supporters over INEC halt to voter registration

The absence of Judge Inyang Ekwo from the Federal High Court in Abuja has stalled the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) trial scheduled for Tuesday.

The case was filed by the Peter Obi Support Network (POSN) on August 4.

The litigants seek to compel the INEC to continue the voter registration exercise until at least November 2022.

The reason for the judge's absence was not disclosed by the court, but the 1st, 2nd and 3rd plaintiffs were present.

At the last session of September 20, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not file a response to the complaint.

The election arbitrator begged the court to complete its response and the court adjourned until October 4.

The plaintiffs insist that the INEC was wrong to stop the CVR until at least 90 days before the 2023 general election.

Their action, FHC/ABJ/CS/1342/2022, filed by a law firm, Ikechukwu Ezechukwu (SAN) & Co., argued that the abrupt termination would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters.

The suit seeks an order compelling INEC to rescind its directive that halted registration on July 31 because it was outside the time limit under the Elections Act of 2022 as amended.
