JUST IN: Buhari passes N819.5bn supplementary budget, blames floods

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retired), has forwarded a Supplementary Finance Bill for 2023 to the National Assembly.

House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila read the contents of the bill's cover letter to members on Wednesday.

Buhari, in the cover letter, said the additional demand of N819,536,937,813 for next year was due to the devastation caused by the floods to farmland and road infrastructure.

According to the president, Nigeria has witnessed the "worst floods in recent history, which have caused massive destruction of agricultural land", adding that the country is now at risk of food insecurity.

He pointed out that the floods had affected "several roads and bridges" in the 36 states of the federation.

The supplementary budget reached the federal parliament about 24 hours before the adoption of the 2023 budget bill.

The president only sent the 2023 finance bill to the National Assembly on Tuesday.
