Kogi Department Head Frustrates Government Efforts - Teachers

Secondary school teachers, under the auspices of the Secondary Schools Academic Staff Union (ASUSS), have accused Kogi State Service Chief, Ms. Hannah Odiyo, of deliberately frustrating the government's good intentions regarding the welfare of state teachers.

ASUSS Kogi State Chairman, Comrade Ranti Ojo, who revealed it on the sidelines of this year's celebration of World Teachers' Day in Lokoja, said the head of service continued to delay the issuance of the circular for Governor Yahaya Bello's approval of extending the retirement age for teachers to 65 or 40 years of service.

Comrade Ojo, while appealing to the head of department to do the necessary without further delay, admitted that teachers are suffering because of poor remuneration.

He called on government at all levels to give high priority to the welfare of teachers across the country, adding that the call became imperative given the enormous challenges facing the education sector.

Speaking on this year's theme, "Educational Transformation Begins with Teachers", he said, "Teachers, especially at the basic and upper secondary levels , face difficult socio-economic conditions, poor learning environment, dwindling resources, low salaries, among others.“

The Union boss called on the state government, among other issues, to urgently address the shortage of teachers in schools, the dilapidated infrastructure and lack of teaching materials, the non- payment of bonuses to retirees and the harmonization of pensions for those who retired before December 2011.

He urged teachers across the state to vote for pro-education candidates ahead of the 2023 general election.

In a message, the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Wemi Jones, who was represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Brother Yakubu Dele Musa, said that the government was giving due attention to the sector to achieve the set goals and assured that the domestication of the national education policy would become soon a reality in Kogi State.
