Attack on Kuje prison: police recapture detainee from Suleja

Niger State Police Command has recaptured one of the Suleja detainees who escaped during the recent breakout at Kuje Medium Security Correctional Center in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that dozens of terrorists launched a daring attack on the facility on July 5, bombing and freeing 879 inmates, including 64 charged with terrorism.

A statement issued Monday in Minna, the Niger State capital, by the Command Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, said a surveillance patrol team between the General Hospital, Suleja and Bakassi, had arrested the fugitive on July 9 at 8:30 p.m.

He explained that based on credible intelligence, the police patrol team stormed an identified compound and arrested a 54-year-old Kazeem Murtala.

During interrogation, the detainee confessed that he escaped from Kuje detention center during the attack and was detained for two years for an offense he committed .

Meanwhile, Niger Command Police Commissioner Monday Bala Kuryas praised the efforts of the patrol team.

The statement quotes Mr. Kuryas as having ordered that the detainee be returned to the detention center, which was complied with.

The PC also appreciated members of the public for providing helpful information to police that facilitated the quick apprehension of the fugitive on the run.

The command urged residents to continue to provide reliable information that could help apprehend other suspected criminals and combat crime and criminality in the state.
