Attack on Kuje prison: Our prisons are not built to withstand terrorist attacks – Comptroller General

The Comptroller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Haliru Nababa, has said that the country's prisons are not sufficiently fortified to withstand the type of attacks they have been subjected to in recent times.

He revealed this on the PREMIUM TIMES Twitter spaces held on Monday to discuss the implications of jailbreaks on the nation's security.

Despite intelligence allegedly provided earlier, Kuje Medium Prison was attacked last week by ISWAP with high explosives to free its members who were serving prison terms in the facility.

The attack led to the escape of more than 800 detainees, although a few of them have been recaptured in the past three days.

Sixty-eight of the escapees are members of the terrorist group Boko-Haram.

A civil defense officer was killed the night of the attack, but no record of outstanding casualties from the attackers who allegedly found help from insiders.

With Mr. Nababa on hand, the conversation, which lasted almost two hours, touched on some of the concerns of experts and Nigerians about the increase in terrorist attacks in the country.

He said he had strengthened security on the ground in prisons in the region, but the capacity was not sufficient.

PREMIUM TIMES exclusively reported that there were more than 30 armed officials on the ground during Tuesday's attack which is believed to have been carried out by hundreds of members of the deadly terror group.

Mr. Nababa stressed the need to strengthen prison facilities not only with highly qualified personnel, but also with new structures capable of resisting the new trend of crime in the country.
