Lagos Assembly selects 20 of 39 commissioner candidates

Twenty of the 39 appointed Commissioners sent to the Lagos State Legislative Assembly by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu have been shortlisted.

This despite concerns expressed by lawmakers and an Islamic group.

The screening began on Sunday, a statement from House Information Officer Bisola Branco-Ademola said Monday.

"It is expected that all cabinet candidates will have been selected by Wednesday, when the exercise is expected to conclude," she said.

The governor submitted names of candidates on July 28, lawmakers rejected it saying some local government areas were not represented.

Criticism following the slate grew further when a group of Islamic clerics and scholars described the makeup of the candidates "as a continuation of the governor's longstanding bias against Muslims in State".

They said the list showed a "ruthless insensitivity to diversity, equity and justice." But the governor denied the allegation.

Screening

On Monday, a committee chaired by Chief House Whip Mojeed Fatai vetted Adetoke Benson-Awoyinka, Mr Sanwo-Olu's former special adviser on housing, and Bola Olumegbon Lawal, former executive secretary of the Yaba local council. Development Zone (LCDA).

The other candidates are Yakoob Alebiosu, Idris Aregbe, Abdul-Kabir Ogungbo, Oreoluwa finnih-Awokoya, Abiola Olowu, Adekunle Olayinka, Mosopefolu George and Aramide Adeyoye.

On Sunday, Mobolaji Ogunlende, Olamide Babatunde, Lawal Pedro and Afolabi avoirayo, former special adviser to the governor for parastatal surveillance, were selected.

Others include Jamiu Alli-Balogun, Olugbenga Olaniyi, Ogunwuyi Ekundayo, Ibrahim Layode, former Badagry State Legislator, Adetokunbo Wahab and Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu.

House Speaker Mudashiru Obasa had recently appointed the 12-man ad hoc committee for the exercise.

The committee must report to the House when it meets again.

At the start of the review, the head of the commission noted that the task facing legislators was consistent with a provision of the 1999 Constitution.

“The House of Assembly has the mandate to select and confirm candidates for the positions of commissioners and special advisers,” he said.

“Recall that on July 28, 2023, the Executive Governor of Lagos State presented a total of 39 appointed Commissioners and Special Advisors,” he said, adding that the recommendation of the committee would be presented in the House.

Committee members include Adedamola Kasumu, Ajomale Oladipo, Saheed Babafemi, Nureni Akinsanya and Ajani Owolabi.

The others are Sa'ad Olumo, Sanni Okanlawon, Adewale Temitope, Ajayi Oladele, Abdulkareem Jubril and Orekoya Abiodun.
