Lagos government closes Ladipo and Oyingbo markets due to filth

The Lagos State government has announced that it is ready to close Ladipo and Oyingbo markets until further notice.

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) condemned the careless dumping of waste, refusal to pay for services and general poor waste management.

A Thursday statement from Ibrahim Odumboni, the CEO/CEO, said markets would be closed from September 22.

Odumboni denounced the unsound environmental practices of traders in defiance of repeated warnings.

The manager said that despite the reduction notices, they continued "the indiscriminate violation of the environment".

"We have no choice but to mention the necessary sanction of closing the markets.

“This is also meant to deter other nonchalant markets,” Odumboni added.

The Managing Director said his agency will ensure that business activities in all markets in Lagos are conducted in a clean and safe environment.

Odumboni noted that the agency has deployed trucks to clean up black spots across the metropolis.

He lamented how government efforts are being sabotaged by people who prefer to litter the roads to avoid paying for services.

Odumboni advised traders in other places to strictly adhere to environmental hygiene or risk the indefinite closure of their markets.
