Lagos teacher jailed for sexually assaulting student

The Ikeja Special Offenses Court has sentenced a teacher, Idowu Daniel, to seven years in prison for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student at a school.

Judge Oluwatoyin Taiwo, however, found that the prosecution failed to establish the defilement charge.

The judge said that the defendant's voluntary statement of confession showed that he had sexually assaulted the minor.

"The defendant admitted fondling the victim's breast twice and attempting to have sex with her but could not penetrate because she was a virgin.

“The defendant is hereby convicted of sexual assault of a child,” she ruled Monday.

NAN reports that the 31-year-old convict begged for mercy when asked to speak.

"My lord, I'm so sorry for what happened. I promise it won't happen again," he told the court.

Judge Taiwo sharply reprimanded Daniel for touching the teen suggestively.

"You are a teacher and you were touching your student's chest. You would have lost your life if the victim had come to court to testify," she said.

The judge previously sentenced the convict to five years in prison, but increased it to seven years after saying he had been in custody for three years.
