Lawan announces new Senate leader

Senate President Ahmad Lawan has announced that Sokoto Senator Ibrahim Gobir will be the new head of the Senate.

He made the announcement at the start of plenary on Wednesday. Some opposition senators will later stage a walkout after Mr. Lawan rejected a motion on the state of insecurity.

The nomination of Mr. Gobir was included in a letter from the National President of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu.

In the letter, Mr. Adamu demanded that Mr. Gobir replace Abdullahi Yahaya, who left the APC for the opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) in June.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how Mr. Yahaya, who represents Kebbi North in the Senate, quit the APC due to the APC crisis in his state.

He had declared that he had decided to pitch his tent with the PDP to join forces with those of his compatriots who are fighting against incompetence, imposition and the violation of democratic norms, principles and practices.

The former Senate leader also complained that the democratic challenges and deficits in Kebbi State began last year “when the governor illegally beheaded the state leadership of the party, imposed unelected wards, local governments, and party state cadres.< /p> ALSO READ: Lawan Announces New Senate Minority Leader, Minority Whip

So after failing to get justice in my former party, the APC, I jumped ship for the PDP with our many supporters in a fight to democratically end the mismanagement and tyranny that are currently rampant in Kebbi State,” he said in a letter to Mr. Lawan.

Mr. Yahaya had quit the APC alongside another Kebbi senator, Adamu Aliero - a decision Mr Lawan called heartbreaking.

Mr. Aliero, who cited similar reasons for his departure, said his defection was "based on the fact that there is no internal democracy within the APC".

He also accused the state governor, Atiku Bagudu, of thwarting the efforts of party members in the state and not giving them a chance.
