Okey Onyekanma, the former Deputy Speaker of Imo State Assembly and Member representing Mbaitoli State Constituency, has asked State Police Commissioner Muhammed Berde to d charges against Uzoma Egemba, a tutor, who was arrested in Owerri on Thursday for scalding the buttocks and body of his 12-year-old servant, Chimkamso Ekeocha.

In a petition to CP, Onyekanma called the fire "child abuse, inflicting serious bodily harm and inhumane treatment".

Describing the minor as his constituent, the lawmaker said his office would work with police to ensure the victim gets justice.

The petition read in part: "My attention has been drawn to a case of child abuse and grievous bodily harm to Chikamso Ekeocha, a 12-year-old maid, by her guardian, Mr. Uzoma Egemba, for riding his children's bike.

“According to the victim, Mr. Egemba burned his buttocks, thighs and body on Sunday, June 26, at his residence at the World Bank, Owerri, using an iron.

"This horrendous act amounts to child abuse, grievous bodily harm and inhumane treatment frowned upon by Part 4 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Act on the Rights of the Child and the Penal Code Act of Nigeria.

"Chikamso Ekeoha, who was admitted to Umuguma Specialist Hospital, is from Ubomiri in Mbaitoli LGA and whose constituency I represent in the Imo State Assembly.

"Therefore, I very respectfully urge you to use your good offices to investigate and prosecute the suspect accordingly and ensure that the minor, Chikamso, receives justice."

The National Chapter of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists has also called on the state government and the CP to ensure justice for the minor.

NAWOJ in-state president Vivian Otti, who spoke when she led members of the association to visit the victim in hospital, said they would work to ensure that the girl obtains justice.

Otti said NAWOJ in the state will notify an attorney who will join the team prosecuting the suspect.
