Lawmakers push for Senate presidency, President is disrespectful – Lukman

National (North West) Vice President of the All Progressives Congress, Mallam Salihu Lukman, described on Tuesday the action of some lawmakers aspiring to senior offices in the upper and lower echelons of the National Assembly without recourse to the ruling party as "disrespectful".

Lukman spoke amid reports that Senator representing Kano North, Jubrin Barau; the Chief Senate Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu; Former Niger Delta Minister and elected Senator from Akwa Ibom North West District Godswill Akpabio and Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi and a few other lawmakers are pushing to become Senate Speaker.< /p>

While Barau reportedly hosted more than 70 elected senators to seek their support ahead of the inauguration of the 10th parliament, Kalu also told reporters at a press conference that it was his turn to be the Senate President of the country.

For his part, Kalu met on Tuesday with the president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired), to declare his intention to be the next president of the Senate. After the meeting at Aso Rock Villa, he told reporters, "I hinted to Mr. President my intention to run for the presidency of the Senate at the 10th National Assembly."

The APC vice president, however, found the approach and lobbying distasteful, saying it was an insult to the ruling party.

In a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday, Lukman said, "So far we only have individual aspirations for leadership positions in the 10th National Assembly. Most aspirations hardly recognize the issues of national cohesion. Unfortunately, most of those who aspire to leadership positions in the 10th National Assembly seem to lack respect for party structures and their members, including the NWC.

“They show little interest in consulting the NWC as a body or its members individually. Either way, there is also the demeaning perception that aspiring leaders could always acquire (however defined) the support of party organs. This needs to be fixed."
