LEADERSHIP Editor-in-Chief, Azu, Wins Columnist of the Year Award

Senior Vice President/Editor-in-Chief of LEADERSHIP, Azu Ishiekwene won the columnist of the year award at the 30th Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA) 2022, held on Sunday at Lagos.

Mr. Ishiekwene, affectionately known as Azu, beat Abimbola Adelakun and Tunde Odesola, both of PUNCH, to win the prize in an entry presented by Vanguard, which among other media outlets in Nigeria and abroad publishes the column weekly union of Azu.

The NMMA Board of Directors is chaired by advertising guru and former CEO of Lintas, Mr. Dele Adetiba. The award in this category is named after Alade Odunewu, one of the best Nigerian pundits of all time. Odunewu was famous for his wit and clarity of speech.

In a LEADERSHIP statement signed by Editor-in-Chief, Raliat Ahmed-Yusuf, the newspaper said: "The award has once again shown a consistency in the quality of Azu's public commentary that has not faltered. hardly faded over the years."

Azu, who has won this NMMA award at least four times in the past during his three-and-a-half-decade career, won his first journalism award 34 years ago when he won the Babatunde Jose award of the best Graduate Student of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos.

Son is one of Nigeria's most syndicated columnists, and is also published on platforms in Ghana, Argentina, South Africa, Europe and the United States.
