Leeds 'close to reaching agreement' for Championship winger; Romano cancels Mata ties

Leeds United are reportedly close to agreeing a deal with Watford to sign Ismaila Sarr.

The Senegalese winger's 2021/22 season has been hampered by injuries as he has made just 22 Premier League appearances.

The Hornets were relegated last season and Sarr returned to the Championship.

He scored 13 goals and provided ten assists in the second division two seasons ago. He has hit the ground running this season, scoring a superb goal from his own half in Monday's 1-1 draw at West Brom.

Following Watford's relegation, Sarr was expected to leave this summer.

The 24-year-old has been linked with Liverpool in the past, although it appears the Reds are no longer interested - if they really are.

Newcastle United and Leeds have also been thrown into the equation in recent months.

Eddie Howe is looking for a new all-round striker and Sarr fits that billing, however, the Magpies boss doesn't seem keen on signing the player.

A report earlier this month claimed Leeds are looking to replace Raphinha - who recently joined Barcelona - with the Watford winger.

And now French outlet Foot Mercato claim Los Blancos are 'close' to reaching an 'agreement' with the Championship club over the signing of Sarr.

Discussions on the player's contract are "almost over", even if his arrival "remains conditioned on a departure in the workforce of Jesse Marsch".

Transfer journalist Nicolo Schira has claimed Leeds will pay £23.6m for Sarr.

Furthermore, Schira says the Senegalese international will sign a five-year contract at Elland Road.

Another player Leeds have been linked to is former Manchester United and Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata.

Rumors of Mata joining the Yorkshire club have intensified this week, however, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has said these rumors have no basis.

Romano wrote on Twitter: "There is nothing agreed between Juan Mata and Leeds, despite the rumours. He is appreciated as a professional and a top person, but no discussion is taking place as things stand.

"Also, the links to Real Oviedo are far from accurate - Mata will make a decision on the future soon."

Mata joined Manchester United from Chelsea for a fee of £37million in 2014.

He played just under 300 times for the Red Devils and became a free agent this summer after his contract expired at the end of last season.
