Looking for a cheap perfume? Here are my top picks | Sali Hugues

Great affordable fragrances. I never thought I would have too many to afford an intro, but here I am, so let's go.

I've always been a huge fan fragrances that are bold, creative and pleasantly bizarre even if they haven't (yet) instinctively been my poison. The Turmeric Latte (£30 for 30ml) is another one that represents my own scent hell, but is nonetheless a brilliant choice for lovers of sweet, pudding goodness. As the name suggests, it's a cozy, creamy, and spicy affair that one would expect to fill in a lidded paper cup. Infused with vanilla but less cupcake with warm, toasty spices, Turmeric Latte will appeal to those who purchase vanilla/amber/tonka flavors which cost much more.

A plus reliable perfume brand that people like is Zara. Jo Malone has created a range of high quality, stylish, affordable and hugely popular cologne-style fragrances for the fast fashion chain, and in his latest collection (inspired by global cities, from £5.99 for a perfume roller), she's micro-pushed things in a more complex direction. Fashionably London (£15.99, if you can get your hands on it – it's still selling out), is an initially crisp and bright citrus floral that dries into something more musky, sexier and powderier. He is sober, work-oriented, and unable to annoy anyone. Stylishly Tokyo (£25.99), however, is Malone's best for Zara so far. White flowers (green leaves and all) glazed with milky tree sap is what I get, and I'm decidedly pro.

Finally, Roger & Gallet raises again, and you'd be just plain stupid to ignore some of the biggest puffs in your portfolio. These are light and luminous fragrances (named "Wellbeing Waters" by the 160-year-old drugstore brand), created by some of the best perfumers in the world. Fleur de Figuier (£13) is comfortably better than 90% of expensive fig fragrances and was created by Francis Kurkdjian, now Head of Fragrance at Dior and one of the greatest living noses in perfumery.

Bois d'Orange is the baby by Dominique Ropion, the undisputed genius behind Portrait de femme (expensive but sublime) by Frédéric Malle. Bois d'Orange is a bright, clean and discreet fragrance that smells like a summer scent in hot weather and a winter scent in cold weather. It's wonderful on any gender, any age. And like her stable mates Roger & Gallet, it's £13, for goodness sake! Cheaper than a bag of oranges at this price.
