Lord of the Rings actors pay tribute to Bernard Hill

Lord of the Rings actors paid tribute to their co-star Bernard Hill, who died at the age of 79.

The actor - who played King Théoden in Peter Jackson's trilogy - is died early Sunday morning.

< p class="ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10">Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan and Sean Astin, who played the four hobbits in the films, said goodbye to their friend "funny, gruff and handsome."

They told fans at Liverpool Comic Con that they had lost a "family member."

Hill was due to appear at the Merseyside event but withdrew.

His co -stars of the films, based on JRR Tolkien's classic fantasy novels, stood on stage together to share their thoughts on his passing.

Astin, who played Frodo's faithful companion, Samwise Gamgee in the trilogy, began by saying: "So we lost a member of our family this morning, passed away Bernard Hill, King Théoden.

"So we want to take a moment before leaving the stage to pay tribute to him.

"We love it. He was fearless, he was funny, he was gruff, he was irascible, he was handsome."
