Louis Vuitton RTW Spring 2023

The last big show on the last day of Paris Fashion Week finally delivered the moment of the Indian summer to the fashion crowd dreamed.

As a battalion of Hollywood stars parade through the courtyard of the Louvre Museum for the spring 2023 of Louis Vuitton show, the scene couldn't have been more cinematic. Alicia Vikander, Cynthia Erivo, Jennifer Connelly and Ana de Armas are just some of the guests who took their places on a circular platform closed by a red curtain.

Once the show started, the curtain opened to reveal a cluster of ruffled red sails: a so-called “monster flower” scenography created by the artist Philippe Parreno. He set the scene for Nicolas Ghesquière's surreal spring range, which placed details like zippers and snaps under a microscope to play with the proportions of the outfits.

"Squid Game" star and Vuitton brand ambassador HoYeon Jung opened the show in a vest adorned with thick rolls of fabric and an oversized zipper, like a futuristic life jacket. A huge silver zipper flapped against the chest of a black dress, while stitched black leather pockets dipped below the hem of a varsity-style jacket.

Zippers and buckles appear trompe-l'oeil on perforated leather suits, while that giant silver buttons reflect the scene like a fish-eye lens.

Ghesquière used ultra-wide belts to cinch in some looks and placed giant gold strap buckles on the shoulders of a black leather dress. Accessories added to the distorted impression, including bags shaped like luggage tags and oversized versions of the brand's monogrammed canvas key pouch.

As Ghesquière's celebrity team can attest, her outfits aren't exactly designed for the run to the supermarket. Instead, her toyland girls looked like sleek space warriors - and this season's gear was fully weaponized.

Just before the show ended, circular mirrors scattered across the set were spinning, giving the front row a good look at themselves, and getting more than a few guests to start filming their own image. It was a fitting end to a rollercoaster season that should trigger some self-reflection, if Ghesquière's magnifying glass has anything to do with it.
