Lazio midfielder's Man Utd contact agents; will bid for Caicedo despite Brighton stance

Man Utd have stepped up their interest in Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as the transfer deadline approaches, according to reports.

The Serb has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for years.

He joined Lazio in 2015 from Genk and is approaching 295 appearances for the Italian side.

Milinkovic-Savic's contract expires in 2024 and the Serie A side hope to sell him, instead of losing him for nothing.

The 27-year-old would likely cost at least £50m if a team signed him from Lazio this summer.

Unsurprisingly, Man Utd have been heavily linked with the player during the summer transfer window.

A report by Corriere dello Sport earlier this month claimed that Milinkovic-Savic wanted to join the Red Devils, while La Repubblica said the club from the Premier League was preparing £57.4m bid.

Rumors have since died down with Man Utd linked with Real Madrid's Casemiro, Juventus' Adrien Rabiot, Brighton's Moises Caicedo and of course, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

De Jong is increasingly less likely to join, meanwhile, a report on Wednesday suggested Casemiro could leave Real Madrid for £50m.

With a new central midfielder a high priority for Erik ten Hag, Man Utd are desperate to land a player in the role before the transfer deadline.

According to Foot Mercato correspondent Santi Aouna, the Red Devils contacted Milinkovic-Savic's agents on Wednesday.

No offers have been made for the player, who has also been linked with Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

As previously mentioned, Ten Hag will be hoping to improve their midfield options, with Fred and Scott McTominay underwhelming in midfield.

Another central midfielder the club have been linked with is Brighton's Moises Caicedo.

Man Utd had the opportunity to sign the Ecuadorian for £5million before he joined the Seagulls.

According to Sky Sports, they have an interest in the 20-year-old.

The Red Devils are set to 'make an offer' for the young midfielder, who impressed against them on the opening matchday of the Premier League season.

Brighton has "no intention" of selling the player, however.

Arsenal, West Ham, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen are all reportedly keeping tabs on Caicedo's situation.

Albion paid just £4.5m to sign the player from Independiente del Valle last year. They'll probably want at least ten times that amount, unfortunately for Man Utd, who clearly fumbled the bag with this one.
