Maria McManus RTW Spring 2023

For women who still seem to look effortlessly elegant but not ultra-feminine, there is to sustainability-minded designer Maria McManus.

His latest line for Spring 2023 builds a capsule wardrobe with a twist — adding bottoms neon green here and organic cotton velvet (in the form of an asymmetrical skirt and floor-skimming tank dress) to shake things up again.

Drawing inspiration from her influencer friend Leandra Medine Cohen, McManus didn't ask what her community could do for her, but what she could do for her community. "What if our community became so enthralled with home composting, for example, that they had an hour less a week to think about consuming something new," she wrote in her look book notes. She elaborated on the idea during a preview at her TriBeCa studio and at home with WWD, discussing community gardens, vendor relationships, her latest crafts, and antioxidant-filled treats like chocolate almonds that floated around the room.

His enthusiasm starts with more responsible fabrics that don't bore (which can often be the case in the sustainability space). Elements like her new organic cotton velor in a form-fitting asymmetrical skirt and dress complement best-selling classics like McManus' signature oversized shirts. GOTS-certified organic cotton is used in all iconic styles, with the addition of shiny satins and a super-soft cotton voile used for an almost neon lemon shorts set. A number of fabrics are sourced from Japan with designs sampled in New York and created by its small team of European pattern makers and tailors.

Looking closer, McManus boasts details on outerwear, like his trench coat in organic cotton, with trapunto stitches and cupro linings made from cotton waste on a closed-loop production system. But through it all, McManus' enduring tailored look continues to be a mid-rise, wide-leg silhouette, and this season blazers are updated with six buttons.
