A couple are 'lucky to be alive' after being crushed by a giant wave while was trying to take a selfie.

The man and woman were enjoying the wild weather and watching the massive 4.1m swell crash against Nobbys Breakwall in Newcastle, north of Sydney early Monday morning.

Moments later, the couple were swept away by a monstrous wave and disappeared into the whitewash with the heartbreaking moment captured on camera by shocked bystanders .

"I realized they were gone and they were down, where they were climbing on the rocks," Ben Arkinstall told NBN News .

A bystander watched helplessly after massive waves swept a man and woman off Nobbys Breakwall near Newcastle < p class="mol-para-with-font">'Several waves came in behind the original wave and kept going over it.'

'It could have been much worse. They may have ended up in the ocean. They lost all their phones.

The man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s miraculously made it ashore, where they were treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital with multiple injuries, including suspected broken bones.

Paramedics said the couple had very lucky to be alive.

"Patients pulled into water can be a dangerous and life-threatening situation," said NSW Ambulance Inspector Jake Broughton-Rouse.
