Matty Bovan RTW Spring 2023

What a jolt of unbridled creativity, craftsmanship and inventiveness that was.

Dolce & Gabbana endorsed and backed Matty Bovan has channeled his childhood dreams into mid- path between Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" and the decadent flamboyance of the New Romantics, its penchant for maximalism in full force.

A strong cast - including Ashley Graham, Lea T and Elisabetta Dessy - traded the checkerboard track for a surprising electro beats.

Hard to tell what was what in this spring collection, not even a bubblegum pink hoodie relatively simple was immediately recognizable for what it was. No two looks are the same and neither one alone can telegraph the endless layers and techniques employed.

The Yorkshire-based designer said in a preview that he explored "controlled chaos" , which relied on texture manipulation and a "camouflage" look.

Scarf dresses, each panel printed in a different pattern of graffiti over geometric shapes, were layered on hand - painted vintage bustiers provided by Dolce & Gabbana as part of the tie-up; brocade Elizabethan sleeves as puffy as a meringue mixed with jeans, also from the luxury brand's archives, which Bovan has distressed, hand-painted, torn and embellished with crystal-encrusted chains, maxi sequins (composed 30% recycled content) and sequins.

Sculptural mini dresses with bumpy bumpy hips and sleeves wore mixed prints, including one combining a checkerboard pattern and purple apples. Bovan's favorite knits, produced in the UK, have also been layered or repurposed, tied together to create a skirt with at least six trails.

A standout look combined with a long brocade mermaid skirt with a bow-shaped top under a cut close to the strapless body. It was topped with a Stephen Jones pyramid-shaped hat giving off "Pinocchio" vibes.

It was quite a gargantuan treat.
