The appetite for Minecraft seems pretty endless. Microsoft needs to keep feeding fans new content, and the latest addition to the portfolio is Minecraft Legends.
It's a real-time action strategy game that will be released in 2023. I got a little preview of it in Germany. At the recent Gamescom expo, I caught up with Minecraft Legends Executive Producer Dennis Ries and Creative Director Magnus Nedfors of Microsoft's Mojang division.
They took me through Minecraft Legends in a demo and then answered my questions. You play it from a third-person perspective and it features both cooperative and competitive multiplayer. Minecraft Legends kicked off in 2018 and was revealed during the Xbox Showcase in June.
As Nordfors says, Minecraft Legends is a story, a legend, told in the Minecraft universe. It's a story about the Overworld and how the Overworld is being invaded by Nether piglins. You are called upon in this legend as a hero to unite the Overworld, fight the piglins, and make lots of friends along the way.

Magnus Nedfors: I'm the Creative Director on the Mojang side. I say this because we do it with Blackbird Interactive in Vancouver. They have a team, and then we're on the publishing side. We announced it a few months ago, and now we're showing it live for the first time. It's a new game for us. We are trying to grow our game portfolio, providing more experiences for our players.
