MLS's NYCFC beat LigaMX's Atlas to win the Campeones Cup

September 15 - New York City FC beat Mexico's Atlas 2-0 in the Campeones Cup last night at Yankee Stadium in New York.

The Campeones Cup is played each year between the winners of the MLS Cup and the winners of the Campeon de Campeones of the Liga MX.

Established in 2018 as the two North American regional league soccer giants moved closer to their competitive structures - next year they will take a month-long break to play a cup competition between the two leagues - the inter-league play-off has now been won four times by MLS teams - Atlanta United, Columbus Crew, Toronto FC and now NYCFC.

Tigres UANL de Monterrey were the winners in 2018, covid and the suspension of the LigaMX in 2020 forced the stoppage of competition.

NYCFC struggled this season after winning the championship in 2021, but got off to a fast start against Atlas and took the lead in less than five minutes.

Gabriel Pereira's free-kick was delivered by Nico Acevedo for Alexander Callens to hammer the back post.

The score remained 1-0 at halftime, but four minutes into the restart NYCFC had their second game when Talles Magno found Maxi Morales who fired low to extend the lead.

Atlas didn't miss his moments and will regret the missed chances and the outstanding performance of NYFC goalkeeper Luis Barraza, who made seven saves, including three superb saves by Atlas' Julian Quinones to secure the title.< /p>

NYCFC's victory follows a trend of American teams (club and national) taking advantage of their traditionally fierce Mexican rivals. The Seattle Sounders were the first American winners in Concacaf Champions League history in May, snapping a 16-game winning streak for Mexican clubs.

The United States men's national team also beat Mexico in the Concacaf Nations League and Gold Cup finals in 2021.

The closer ties between MLS and LigaMX become more than just a competition and a business opportunity as the two countries prepare to jointly host the World Cup in 2026.

The day before the game, NYCFC and Atlas FC, along with MLS and LIGA MX, joined forces to host a community event in the Bronx. Clubs unveiled a small free library at P.S. 49 Willis Avenue Elementary School with a 'Read Aloud' event to celebrate an investment in literacy - the event was followed by a football clinic for young people premises on one of NYCFC's 54 new community mini-pitches built as part of the club's commitment to increasing access to safe spaces to play.
