Moeen Ali: More players will withdraw from certain formats

Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid celebrate with the trophy after winning the final of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup between New Zealand and England at Lord's Cricket Ground

Test captain Ben Stokes left the One Day Internationals in July, while he and his England teammate Jonny Bairstow chose to miss The Hundred.

"At the moment this is not not sustainable," said Moeen, who retired from Test cricket last year.

Moeen , 35, fears over-50 cricket will disappear in the face of growing dominance by Twenty20.

Speaking after his side Birmingham Phoenix lost to the Trent Rockets in The Hundred on Saturday, he said: "Something has to be done because I'm afraid to lose Format 50 over a few years because it's almost like the long and boring. No significance is given to this at this time.

"International cricket in all three formats is by far the best to play cricket, but I fear there are so many tournaments that players are retiring more now - and you will soon see more of them - because of overlapping schedules."

The schedule has become more crowded in recent years due to an increase in global events and the emergence of more T20 franchise competitions worldwide, as well as The Hundred in England and Wales.

The 50-over One-Day Cup is currently contested by counties missing several players involved in The Hundred .

Indian bowler Ravichandran Ashwin recently questioned the long-term survival of the 50+ game and said he no longer watches 50+ games on TV.

Announcing his ODI retirement, Stokes, 31, said: "There's been too much cricket for people to play all three formats now. Connor told BBC Sport this week that Stokes' message had "absolutely " been heard.

"It's something we have to struggle with - it's us with the players, other boards, the International Cricket Council and the Association of Cricket Professionals," she said.
