Muslim-Muslim ticket: Fayemi urges the CAN to present the charter of Christian demands

The Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, has called on the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to use the challenge to the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress to present his charter of party demands.

Mr. Fayemi said the choice of Kashim Shettima, a Muslim, as the running mate of Bola Tinubu, also a Muslim, by the APC is a matter of political calculation, not skill.

He said this on Friday during a courtesy visit paid to him by the new leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ekiti State branch, led by its president, Emmanuel Aribasoye.

Mr. Aribasoye had raised the Muslim-Muslim ticket issue during the visit.

Mr. Fayemi, who resigned and backed Mr Tinubu in the June presidential primaries, said the charter should set out "irreducible minimum conditions acceptable to Christians".

“The Christian leadership should use this current challenge as an opportunity to present a charter of demands to all political candidates, especially our party (APC), outlining the irreducible minimum conditions acceptable to Christians in the next political dispensation .

“A charter of demands that would represent the values you preach to us in church by outlining our concerns, highlighting the place of Christianity in the Nigerian project, and then placing our demands before political leaders. the Church organizes debates around matters of concern between all the candidates,” the governor said.

He added that the demand chart would bring more benefits to Christians than focusing on ticket composition.

The governor noted that Christians consider politics a "dirty game", therefore they have disengaged from it. He added that this view had to change.

“Many Christians see politics as a dirty game, and for this reason, are disengaged from the political process. It is time for us to realize that there are compelling reasons for Christians to participate in politics. in my opinion, whatever makes us good Christians makes us good citizens.

"I can tell you that Christians who are in politics are also concerned about the question you raised about the Muslim-Muslim ticket. Not so much because of faith, but because of fair representation and representation in a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural setting will always be a matter of concern.

“But where we are now my call to Christians is to do what is expected of us. presidential candidate and other party leaders that we need to take quick action that we should have taken sooner by approaching Christendom leaders and explaining the background of the selection that was about to take place,” he said. -he declared.

CAN's opposition to the Muslim/Muslim ticket

CAN has spoken out against the Muslim/Muslim ticket since Mr. Tinubu announced former Borno Governor Mr. Shettima as his running mate.

The choice of the former governor has drawn criticism from those who believe Mr Tinubu, a Muslim from the south, should have chosen a Christian from the north as his running mate.

At Mr. Shettima's unveiling as running mate, the presence of attendees in cassocks suggested that some Christian leaders support APC's Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket despite CAN opposition.

But CAN quickly disavowed the men, saying they were imposters hired by the APC to feign support from the Christian community for the Tinubu-Shettima ticket. Some of the clerics who attended the event, however, said they were not hired.
