Name 302 sanctioned stations, MRA urges NBC

The Media Rights Agenda on Monday asked the National Broadcasting Commission to provide it, under the Freedom of Information Act 2011, with details of 302 broadcast stations allegedly sanctioned by the Commission in four months after the campaigns for the 2023 elections started in September 2022.

MRA said it was seeking the information following the announcement made by NBC Managing Director Balarabe Ilelah at a press conference he held in Abuja on 9 February 2023, where he reportedly stated that out of the 740 stations currently operating in Nigeria, the Commission had sanctioned 302 stations between September 28, 2022 and January 31, 2023, for various offences.

In the FOI request addressed to the Director General of the Commission and signed by a program officer at the MRA, Ms. Maimuna Momoh, asked NBC to provide her with a list of the 302 stations sanctioned by the NBC, including details such as station names and locations.

According to MRA in the release, it asked NBC to provide for each of the 302 stations on the list, the name of the person or entity that filed the complaint against the station causing the penalty, date of complaint and details of complaint or allegation against each station.

Momoh said, "MRA also requested that NBC provide it with copies of all NBC correspondence with the stations against which the complaints were filed, in which it advised them of the complaints. or allegations against as well as copies of all correspondence from all stations against which complaints have been made in response to the allegations against them.

“He requested from NBC a list of all broadcasting stations against which NBC received complaints of any kind, in accordance with the provisions of the Broadcasting Code of Nigeria, between September 28 2022 and January 31, 2023, which the Commission investigated and absolved of any wrongdoing; details of the penalties imposed by the BNC on each of the 302 stations sanctioned by the Commission between September 28, 2022 and January 31, 2023, as well as a list of all stations to which the BNC imposed fines, including the amount of the fines the fine imposed on each of the stations."
