Netfl ix is building its own video game studio, as it steps up its efforts to gain a foothold in the gaming industry.

Based in Helsinki, Finland, it will be led by former Zynga and Electronic Arts executive Marko Lastikka.

Netflix has already bought small games, such as developer Oxenfree Night School Studio.

But the streaming giant is now going a step further and creating a studio from scratch.

Lastikka is an established gaming figure, having co-founded studio Zynga - also in Helsinki - which worked on FarmVille 3 under his direction.

Amir Rahimi, Netflix's Vice President for Game Studios, announced the "vision to create a world-class game studio" in a blog post.

"[It] will bring a variety of delicious and deeply engaging original games with no ads and no in-app purchases."

In April, Netflix announced a loss of 200,000 subscribers, its first quarterly loss since 2011. Its share price fell 35%, wiping out more than $50 billion ($46.5 billion pounds) of the company's market value.

Netflix then lost nearly a million subscribers between April and July 2022, the most most of its history, although it still has over 220 million subscribers worldwide.

Why Helsinki?

Netflix bought Helsinki-based Next Games in March 2022. It already had a working relationship with the game developer, who made a mobile game based on Netf lix hit series, Stranger Things.
