New tricks for old apps

If you haven't used some of your phone's preloaded programs in years, the software may surprise you with updated or hidden features.

When the iPhone arrived in 2007, Apple's preinstalled apps for weather, stocks, and a calculator were pretty basic. Once more versatile third-party apps hit the scene a year later, it was easy to overlook these default offerings. Over time, however, Apple and Google have added many new features to these older apps and added new offerings.

Why use an app from Big Tech? Well, you are using already company software, and there is less risk of malware. But don't forget to check the privacy policy of any app you download to see what personal data is collected.

Here's a quick guide to several Apple- and Google - make apps — and how to remove them if you always never use them.

Apple Sleep Updates

If you haven't opened Apple's weather app in a few years, it got a major overhaul after Apple bought rival weather app Dark Sky in 2020 and integrated its technology. Apple Weather now includes precipitation alerts, hyperlocal forecasts, and color radar maps. Panels displaying air quality, ultraviolet index, humidity, wind speed, and sunrise/sunset times open for detailed information. There's also a 10-day forecast: tap a day to see predicted high and low temperatures and conditions.
