Niger: Gov Bago advocates short-term vocational training in universities

Niger State Governor, Hon. Mohammed Umaru Bago, stressed the importance of prioritizing vocational training in the education sector.

During a courtesy visit by New Gate University management and staff to Government House in Minna, Governor Bago suggested that scholarships be awarded to top students as an incentive, while short-term vocational training opportunities are created for those unable to continue their studies.

Governor Bago said, "Let us encourage vocational training, even at the university level, by introducing short courses on how to repair telephones, repair computers, maintain barbers and repair microphones We need more people in this category than people with degrees.”

He also expressed concern about the insufficient number of doctors in the state and underscored the government's commitment to supporting those interested in medical-related courses.

Governor Bago proposed a bond agreement where medical students would receive a 50% scholarship and pledge to work for the state government for a certain number of years before moving elsewhere.< /p>

The governor also urged stakeholders in the education sector to think innovatively, leveraging technology to promote online learning.

He encouraged the management of New Gate University to engage in public-private partnerships for infrastructure development, to consider renewable energy as an alternative energy source and to make investments that would bring growth and development at the institution.

Governor Bago commended the founder of the university for establishing the institution and assured that his administration will continue to implement policies and programs that promote university development in Niger State.

New Gate University Vice-Chancellor Professor Yusuf Sadiq has stressed the importance of prioritizing the education of young people as they are agents of positive change and the future of society .

He mentioned that the university has partnered with a foundation to provide 50% scholarships to qualified applicants from all 25 local government areas in the state, benefiting 120 students.

Prof. Sadiq also said that the Pro-Chancellor has agreed to offer 100% scholarships to the best students in public schools in Metropolitan Minna, regardless of their socio-economic background.

The university offers courses in ICT, cybersecurity, medical subjects, etc., in the hope of producing graduates who will contribute to the development of the state.

Prof. Sadiq called on the governor to provide support in the areas of security, reliable power supply and conducive learning environments for students.

The New Gate University delegation was led by Pro-Chancellor, Nuhu Hassan.
