Nigeria Loses 95% Of Oil Production At Bonny Terminal Due To Theft - Kyari

Africa's largest oil producer loses nearly all oil output from the oil hub of Bonny, the town after which its premium Bonny Light oil is named and a key export point for the country, Mele Kyari, told NNPC Limited on Tuesday.< /p>

Nigeria, in a bid to curb crude theft, this month launched an app to monitor the incidence.

"The most difficult thing to deal with today is the problem of crude oil theft, it's real and it's happening," Kyari told a briefing at the State Headquarters in Abuja.

“Are we helpless? No, we are not helpless and our efforts are bearing fruit.

"As we speak, what you see on screen is a typical site where crude oil is stolen and processed in illegal refineries. And it's so common around the pipeline that I can tell you in a single line for just under 200 kilometres, we had 295 illegal connections and you see the data,” he said.

Mr. Kyari added that nobody produces oil, so the next person will take it.

He noted that the Chief of the Defense Staff has been directed to coordinate a process that will ensure both kinetic and non-kinetic responses, including commitments from communities, private contractors and technology.

"Through these activities, we have so far, together with the Nigerian Army and other government security network agencies, recovered 35.8 million liters of crude, 22 million liters of diesel, 0 .15 million liters of premium motor gasoline and 0.76 million liters of kerosene.

“11 ships were boarded, 30 speedboats, 179 wooden boats and 37 trucks. What we're doing now, we're not stopping them, we're burning them down so they don't go back to business,” he said.

"And in addition to this, the activities that resulted in the destruction of 959 metal vats, 737 ovens, 452 pot pits, 342 tanks and 355 pots were destroyed."

"It just means destroying the environment more than anything. Yes, we know we've lost income, opportunity and so much more.

"We have lost money as a country, but more than anything, what it has done to our environment in some cases can no longer be fixed.

He noted that it is a very, very insignificant minority that is involved in this and that the communities are the victims.

"If you go to these communities, you will see that they are in trouble.

"They can't access clean water, they can't fish or farm and sometimes they are forced by these criminals to act in an illegitimate way and that's why we work with them. < /p> Support the integrity and credibility journalism of PREMIUM TIMES Good journalism costs a lot of money.
