#NigeriaDecides2023: APC responds to Obasanjo, says he calls for military takeover

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo's claim of fraud in the country's presidential election last Saturday as an attempt to provoke a military takeover of Nigeria.

The former president claimed on Monday that the election results had been doctored. He also called for the intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Reacting to the former president's claims, a campaign council spokesman, Dele Alake, said Mr Obasanjo was not an indifferent party in the election.

He also dismissed the ex-president's claims, saying he had no proof.

He said: "Our attention was drawn to a press release by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in which he virtually called for a truncation of the ongoing electoral process and the cancellation of elections already held on the basis of frivolous, unfounded statements and baseless allegations by politicians who are sore losers and who have no respect for democratic values.

“No true democrat should seek to abort the process simply because he thinks the election is not going his way. What Obasanjo subtly calls for in his infamous statement is a coup against democracy and the constitution.

"Obasanjo repeated without a single iota of evidence the rumors he had picked up that the bimodal voter accreditation system had been compromised and that the announced election results were fraudulent.

"It is tragic that a former president who should be a statesman in his demeanor and speech is recklessly seeking to endanger and derail our democratic process for totally selfish, selfish and malicious reasons. He offers no credible evidence to prove its laughable and ridiculous allegations against INEC and the credibility of the ongoing process.

“Of course, we are all aware that Obasanjo is not an impartial and disinterested party when it comes to this election. Peter Obi and asking young Nigerians to vote en masse for him.Of course, our reaction was that the former president was entitled to his views and that the election result would demonstrate if he had any electoral worth. fate would have it, Peter Obi was defeated even in Obasanjo's own voting unit in Abeokuta in Ogun State.But it is now evident that the only election that Obasanjo will agree to be free, fair and believable is the one that will make Obi the winner, which is ridiculous."

Mr. Alake also praised President Muhammadu Buhari for his adherence to democratic principles, calling on him not to allow Mr. Obasanjo to entice him, "tainting his democratic credentials in this regard. He, however, called on Nigerians to reject Mr. Obasanjo's claims and advice on the elections.

"The constitution has stipulated processes to seek redress against electoral malpractices in the past and these have been tested many times and used to redress electoral injustice where proven. Nigerians must reject Obasanjo's dubious and hypocritical advice and stay strictly and firmly on the path of constitutionalism and democratic regularity."
