Nigerians expected to get their passports in two weeks: minister

Home Affairs Minister Bunmi Tunji-Ojo said on Tuesday that 55,000 of the 200,000 passport backlogs had been cleared.

He added that more information would be obtained before the end of the two-week deadline given to the Immigration chief, adding that once the backlogs were cleared, Nigerians should be able to obtain their passports in two weeks.

He spoke during the visit of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, to his office in Abuja.

This is contained in a statement by the Press Director of the Ministry of Interior, Afonja Ajibola.

He said: “Nigerians must not be relegated from being citizens of Nigeria by denying them passports.

“He reiterated his belief that we need to get it now, adding that he gets updates every morning; and that just this morning he was informed that approximately 55,000 passports have been authorized, out of the 200,000 overdue passports he had requested to obtain in two weeks.

“He further assured that as the arrears are cleared, Nigerians will begin to benefit from the efficient service of getting their passports issued within two weeks of their application. »

Speaking, Edu promised the widows of slain personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Immigration Service, Nigerian Correctional Service and Federal Service fire to have access to subsidized loans.

She also promised that inmates in correctional centers would be empowered through skills training programs.

She said: “The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Beta Edu, has said that the mandate of his ministry has been expanded to cover more Nigerians, who are around 16 million people likely to experience insecurity leading to their displacement, thus causing humanitarian crises.

“She also said her ministry was ready to intervene in the provision of soft loans to widows of the deceased NSCDC, correctional officers, men and officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service and to fire officers. According to her, inmates of penitentiary establishments will begin to benefit from a similar intervention through a skills acquisition program.

“She, however, said that since the Federal Fire Service is an agency under the supervision of the ministry that also responds to disasters, its attention will also be given in this direction; while the NSCDC’s security intelligence role will also be enabled under the joint partnership. »
