Nine dead and 10 injured in car crash in Abuja

Nine people have been confirmed dead and 10 others injured in a fatal car accident on the Yangoji-Abaji road in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Federal Road Safety Corps spokesperson Mr. Bisi Kazeem confirmed this in a statement on Sunday.

Kazeem noted that the accident involved a Toyota Hiace bus with vehicle registration number KTG-450 KQ and a Howo Sino truck on the Yangoji-Abaji road around 06:05 a.m. Sunday.

He added that the crashed bus was coming from Osun State and heading towards Katsina State, but unfortunately crashed into a stationary truck.

According to him, the accident involved two vehicles and both were for commercial purposes.

“Twenty-two people were involved in the accident. They were all male. 10 were injured and nine were killed. First aid was given to two. FRSC recovered 3,170 N, six bags and four different cell phones.

"The rescue team was a joint team of Zebra 6 Yangoji, Zebra 6, 16 Abaji and the police. However, the injured victims were taken to Abaji General Hospital by Zebra 16 and the police on patrol.

"While the nine dead bodies were deposited at Kwali General Hospital Mortuary, Kwali NPF Division took over the investigation," he said.

Kazeem noted that Acting Corps Marshal, FRSC Dauda Biu said the crashes resulted from dangerous overtaking and possible loss of control.

The Acting Corps Marshal pointed out that nighttime accidents were more fatal than daytime ones.

He reiterated that the body will continue to redouble its efforts by constantly engaging the motoring public across the country, through an aggressive awareness and awareness campaign, until the desired result is achieved .

Biu advised vehicle owners to make sure their vehicles are in order before putting them on the road, to avoid traffic accidents, especially at night.
