No pan-continental future for Euros, says UEFA president Ceferin

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said the organization would not repeat a pan-continental hosting of the European Championship after Euro 2020, but did not rule out other successful joint bids for the European Championship. future.

Last year's rescheduled tournament, set to celebrate its 60th anniversary, was beset by logistical difficulties presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2024 tournament will revert to a single host nation in Germany, but the 2028 edition could again see multiple hosts, with the British Isles bidding against Turkey for the functions.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Ceferin confirmed that there will be no more continental events in the future, but he is not opposed to shared accommodation between smaller neighboring countries.

"We are not considering such Euro tournaments in 10-11 countries, it was already complicated enough," he said. "With [the pandemic], it was even more complicated.

"As for sporting considerations, Switzerland played one match in Rome and then in Baku, and some teams played at home the whole time.

"Those who didn't travel and played at home ended up in the final. We don't like this concept at all.

"It was a good idea. It was the 60th anniversary of the euro, a pan-European friendship… Those were the elements of this idea.

"I'm not saying the idea was bad. But my feeling is that the euro should take place in one or two countries if we're talking about smaller countries."
