Norway look to Hege Riise to save women's team fortune

August 3 - Following a disappointing Euro 2022 campaign and the departure of Martin Sjögren, Norway have appointed record international Hege Riise (pictured) as their new women's national team coach.

Sjögren resigned after Norway left the European Championship after Norway failed to progress from the first round. The Norwegians beat Northern Ireland 4-1 in their first game, but England beat Sjögren's side 8-0 in their second game. Austria then knocked the Norwegians out of the tournament with a 1-0 victory.

No details on the length of the 53-year-old Riise's contract have been announced.

Riise has won 188 caps during her playing career and scored 58 goals. She was part of a Norwegian generation that was among the best in the world, winning the 1995 World Cup and gold at the Sydney Olympics. She also coached Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics.
