Novak Djokovic pressure mounts as Joe Biden sends new letter amid US Open saga

The US Open could be the second major tennis tournament of 2022 that Novak Djokovic will miss due to his vaccination status, with the Serbian still not having received the shot. But Republicans aren't giving up on their fight to get the 21-time major champion to New York in time for the tournament's August 29 start date.

Unvaccinated foreigners are still banned from traveling to the United States under current laws, and Djokovic will want to avoid a repeat of his deportation from Australia in January. A US-based group called the Serbian-American Voting Alliance has previously written to President Joe Biden saying it is "in America's interest" to make sure Djokovic is competitive. p>

And now Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert from Texas has tried to pressure Biden after sending his own letter to the president. The document called the vaccine travel warrant “anti-science” and “un-American,” mentioning Djokovic by name as he sought to have the legislation repealed.

“Novak Djokovic overcame war and the threat of famine to become one of the best tennis players in the world, if not the best player,” Gohmert said before contacting the president. "Yet, it now looks like he may not be able to overcome the cold, heartless, malicious and scientifically oblivious mindset of the Biden administration in order to compete in the 2022 US Open.

He went on to slam the current government, suggesting it was either "completely delusional" or trying to make the platform of a "totalitarian dictator [Biden]". The letter was signed by seven other House Republicans representing Arizona, Illinois, Kentucky, South Carolina, Texas, Florida and Missouri.
