FIRST VACATION REMEMBER?

Spending a week in a seaside lodge in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, as a boy. We didn't have a refrigerator and I remember the rubber-capped ice cream man who came back every few days with big blocks of ice that he hung on his back.

FIRST TIME ABROAD ?

After graduating from college in the summer of 1963, I went to a town in Italy called Urbino to teach English — my students were all young women, the food was delicious and the city was wonderful. It was probably my best work.

I'm more of a driver. My last books were inspired by road trips. With a car, you can go anywhere, anytime.

This is the story of brothers in conflict in a small town like the one I grew up in, Medford, Massachusetts, but I have it called Littleford in my book thinking, "That'll fool them!"< height="423" width="634" alt="After graduating from college in the summer of 1963, Paul went to an Italian town called Urbino (above) to teach English "That was probably my best job," he says "class="nothing" />
