Obaseki plots to use militiamen for elections — Edo APC

THE Edo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress alleged on Thursday that the state government planned to use its Edo State Vigilante Network to intimidate the opposition and manipulating Saturday's elections.

APC made the allegation in a statement from its publicity secretary, Peter Uwadiae, on Thursday.

The party alleged that Governor Godwin Obaseki secretly tried to use the Edo State Vigilante Network to "intimidate, harass and cause mayhem during and after the elections , especially in rural areas of the state". ."

He said: "It should be noted with grave concern that the Elections Act 2022 did not and never contemplated the use of vigilante personnel for security during elections. For the avoidance of doubt, the only security officers contemplated in the law for security duties during elections are the Nigerian Police.”

But Edo State Communications and Guidance Commissioner Chris Nehikhare called the APC claim a false alarm.

He said, "How can we be accused of such intent in an election that we are going to win?" The APC sits down and cooks up stories; they have no evidence to back up their claim, besides we are so confident that we will win. Why should we disrupt an election we're going to win?"

Police Public Relations Officer SP Chidi Nwabuzor said: "We have said that there is no quasi-security team that will participate in the election; only Nigeria Police and other sister security agencies (are authorized by law).

Director General of the Edo State Investment Promotion Bureau, Kelvin Uwaibi, speaking to reporters on "The 2023 Presidential Elections and their Possible Impact on Business in Nigeria" , urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, the federal government, and other stakeholders to work together to organize credible and peaceful elections in February and March.

Uwaibi noted that skewed elections around the world negatively impact the business environment, leading to job losses and an unproductive economy.
