Offa/Erin Ile: Kwara government urged to implement Supreme Court judgment

Indigenous people of Erin-Ile community of Oyun local government area in Kwara State on Tuesday urged the state government to implement the 2018 Supreme Court ruling on the centuries-old Offa/Erin-Ile land dispute.

Speaking with reporters in Ilorin, the people, under the aegis of the Progressive Union of Erin-Ile, advised the state government to drop its current attempt to recreate another border between Offa and Erin-Ile to avoid anarchy.

The two neighboring communities in Kwara State have clashed for years over communal land, resulting in loss of life and property.

The community of Erin Ile claimed that in December 2018, the Supreme Court affirmed that the national secretariat of the Federal Polytechnic and the Offa Descendants Union fell within the territory of Erin-Ile.

Erin-Ile Progressive Union National Legal Counsel Amos Adewoye said the recent formation of a "kangaroo committee of mediators for peace between the towns of Erin-Ile and Offa about a land dispute is an attempt to rewrite the Supreme Court judgment and impose its own whims and whims to establish an illegal and unconstitutional boundary between the two communities.”

Adewoye, represented by Muyideen Bello (Esq), added that the state government, by its current action, is heading down the path of anarchy.

"Kwara State Government's current plan to move the common boundary boundary along this axis is an illogical and unconstitutional attempt to alter the boundary of the two local governments that were parties to the appeal ultimately determined by the Supreme Court on December 14, 2018.

“The state government need not be reminded that it is constitutionally vested with no such power and that its current efforts are futile, a journey to nowhere but anarchy.< /p>

"An unjust and illegal appropriation of one person's wealth for another is a prelude to anarchy and the time has come to prevent it."

Mr. Adewoye appealed to well-meaning people, authorities and organizations to bring the state government under control.

"Several lives and property have been sadly lost due to acts of callousness and brazen disobedience to the rule of law by the state government in the past, and no effort should be spared by the world to stem this tide and smother another crisis in the bud,” he said.
