Okupe's re-arrest is embarrassing, says LP

The Labor Party has disapproved of the re-arrest of its former chief executive of the party's Presidential Campaign Council, Dr Doyin Okupe, by the Department of State Services, calling it "embarrassing" .

The party described the new arrest as unjustified on the grounds that Okupe fulfilled the condition of his release after his conviction for money laundering.

The party's Presidential Campaign Council Chief Spokesperson, Yunusa Tanko, said, "I can confirm to you that Dr. Doyin is fine, he left Awolowo Road, the DSS installations a few moments ago and DSS apologized to him for the mistake they made in shutting him down again.

"For us, we found this embarrassing for someone who has already paid for the charge against him in the Federal High Court, because if he had anything left, he wouldn't would not have left the premises of the court as a free man.

"This was orchestrated to embarrass him, the DSS apologizes to him, which I can confirm to you directly, that he is released and continues his journey."

However, contrary to the party's position, Okupe had said that it was the EFCC that apologized to him for the commission's error in his re-arrest.

In a tweet on his official account, Okupe wrote, "I was arrested and detained at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos this morning, January 12, while on my way to UK for medical examinations, years after my passport was withheld by the FHC, Abuja.

"I have just left the EFCC office where senior and junior officers from Lagos and Abuja apologized to me for the mistake."

Questioning the action, he asked if it was a professional hazard.
