Ondo FMC doctors start strike, cite stress

Members of the Association of Resident Physicians at the Federal Medical Center in Owo have begun a two-week warning strike due to understaffing at the hospital.

It was found that the doctors closed the services of the hospital after the general meeting of the association.

ARD Owo FMC President Dr Olaopa Gideon said the strike was unavoidable as they were working “under extremely stressful conditions”.

According to him, there were only 80 medical residents and health workers currently employed at the hospital and no jobs have been held at the hospital since 2018.

He said: "But now one person is doing the work of five people. We have been on this issue for the last year. It is getting worse and worse as many people are leaving the system.

“There has been no employment in FMC Owo since 2018. Employing 200 more doctors and health workers will solve the problem. They also do not pay for our extra work. service calls every day."

In a statement issued after the meeting, the aggrieved doctors also raised the problem of the lack of adequate and secure accommodation for their colleagues working at the hospital annex in Akure.

The statement reads: "We implore management and all relevant federal government offices to ensure the employment of medical residents and interns at the hospital to address the critical labor shortage. work and the overwhelming workload that our members face in the hospital.

"The Association can no longer bear the exhaustion experienced by its members and asks that the recruitment of medical residents and House Officers be seriously started.

"Management shall provide fortified suitable accommodation with necessary amenities for those currently assigned to Akure Annex and Association Officers shall certify standard of accommodation prior to acceptance."< /p>
