One person has been confirmed to have been shot as gunfire and fires were reported in the former town of Ikare Akoko, in the state's Northeast Akoko Local Government Area by Ondo.

Several other people were also reportedly injured and property destroyed in the incident on Monday morning

Although reports say two people died in the chaos, police say the only person shot dead is alive but is receiving treatment in hospital.

However, Ondo state police spokesman Funmilayo Odunlami said calm had returned to the town.

"Our men are here now and calm has returned to the town," she said.

Ms Odunlami said the police were investigating the cause of the seizure.
