Oshiomole apologizes to Senate for 'looting' comment

Edo North lawmaker Adams Oshiomole has apologized to the Senate for vandalism allegations made against his colleagues.

Oshiomhole had, during a Sunday appearance on Channels TV's Politics Today, alleged that members of the 9th National Assembly had taken items from their various offices, including carpets.

He said he and most of the federal legislators in the 10th National Assembly used their personal money to refurbish their offices.

"Despite the presence of security men and women, televisions, carpets and chairs were looted by former senators and members of the House of Representatives

“Former lawmakers left their offices in shambles with holes in the wall, which had to be repaired by current lawmakers in their pockets,” he said.

However, during Tuesday's plenary session, Senator Adeola Solomon moved a motion demanding an apology from Oshiomhole.

Adeola said, "The issue at hand concerns one of our colleagues who gave a television interview regarding the 9th Senate, of which I was a member.

"On said broadcast, the senator told the world that we looted our offices and that chairs, tables, televisions and other equipment were taken away by the senators.< /p>

"I am very committed to this and feel that my privileges have been taken away. I am one of the senators who served in the 9th Senate. This is a very serious matter, he was addressing Nigerians about this Senate."

Senator Adamu Aliero (PDP - Kebbi Central) supported Adeola saying that Oshiomhole should apologize.

Following the revelation, Senate Chief Whip, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, on a point of order, proposed that the Senate meet in executive session to deliberate on the "sensitive" issue .

However, when the motion to open the closed session was put to a voice vote, senators elected to have the matter discussed in plenary session by voting “no”.

At this point, Senate Speaker Godswill Akpabio called on Oshiomhole to approach the President. After a brief conversation with Oshiomhole, Akpabio asked Oshiomhole to state his own version of the matter.

Oshiomhole, in his brief, apologized for his comment that he had defended the Senate during his TV interview under reference rather than indicting the 9th Senate senators for looting their offices.

Oshiomole said, "I didn't speak to social media; I spoke with a respected TV station. I was asked by the TV host as to what which justified the appropriation of 70 billion naira for the comfort of the members of the National Assembly.

"The allegation was made by the TV host, at no time did I say that the senators looted their offices.

"Having listened to my explanation, that was not the intention and that was not my statement and to those who think I have offended them, I apologize as I cannot get out of my house and go to the media to abuse anyone."
