Osun government candidates sign peace deal next week

The Chairman of the Independent National Election Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, on Monday oversaw a mock accreditation exercise conducted in some selected voting units in Osun State ahead of the 16 July for governors.

The INEC boss supervised the exercise in the registration area/district​​–​Ataoja 'D' (040), the voting unit​​– ​CAC Grammar School, Araromi, Osogbo and Enrollment Area/Ward -​Ataoja 'E' (05), Voting Unit​​​​-​Salvation Army Primary School (005), both located in the metropolis of Osogbo.

Speaking with reporters shortly after observing the drill at one of the polling units, the INEC boss said the drill was aimed at assessing the readiness of the commission for the ballot.

He said: "We are here to assess the readiness of the commission to organize the elections of July 16, 2022 and also to visit some designated centers while we carry out an accreditation exercise fictitious.

"In this particular center, we are achieving 100% success for everyone who has come through for accreditation so far.

"Next week I will be back in the state to meet with stakeholders and then there will be the signing of a peace accord under the auspices of the National Peace Committee. C is our mission."

Earlier, while inspecting non-sensitive documents at the premises of the Osogbo local government's INEC office, Yakubu, who was accompanied by the commission's resident election commissioner for Osun , Prof. Abdulganiyy Raji, said the July 16 election should be better than the recent Ekiti poll and called for the rapid movement of materials to various units.

Giving further instructions to the local government election officer, Yakubu said, "Identify registration area centers so that on election day you can activate the centers as early as 6 o'clock in the morning. We should wait for the electorate, not otherwise.

"Remember Ekiti was good, but we want Osun to break our record in Ekiti and the 2023 general election. We rely on you to arrange transportation, move materials quickly , liaise with security and move them in time.

"We need to get it right. In RAC centers, make sure there is adequate electricity so they can charge some equipment like the dual-modal voter credential system and banks so on election day we can have a flawless exercise."

Meanwhile, Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje; and his Lagos State counterpart, Babajide Sanwoolu, on Monday urged voters in Osun to re-elect state governor Adegboyega Oyetola.

The two governors addressed the gathering of all-progressive Congressional Governors from Odo Otin Local Government in Okuku.

Sanwo-Olu, who is also chairman of the APC's Election Campaign Council, said the ruling party intended to score a landslide victory in the election, which serves prelude to the general elections of 2023. elections.

“We are not here just to win, but to win big as a precursor to a bigger election to be held in 2023. Oyetola impressed us as a party; more of our colleagues are still coming out of solidarity,” he said.

Also speaking at the rally, which was attended by the party's national secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore, Ganduje, who is the co-chairman of the APC campaign council for the election, predicted a landslide victory for the party in the elections and called on the electorate to vote for Oyetola.
