Our concern for the quality of learning, the integrity of examinations unwavering — Owners of Muslim schools

The owners of Muslim schools in the country are committed to improving the quality of knowledge, skills, morals and values imparted to their students throughout the country.

National Chairman of the League of Muslim School Owners (LEAMSP), Mr. Abdulwahid Obalakun gave the assurance during a recent stakeholder training conference organized by the group in Lagos.

As many as 50 delegates from Kwara, Ogun, Oyo and Lagos States, among others, participated in this one-day program on the theme: "Measurement and Evaluation: Ways to Maintain Examination Integrity" .

Welcoming the participants to the event, Obalakun said that LEAMSP as an association and its members frequently review its activities and also undergo trainings in the necessary areas to ensure that things are done according to the global best practices in the education sector.

He said that one of the ways to achieve this goal was to organize a stakeholder training conference where they shared ideas and thoughts and were also exposed to new expert knowledge.

He noted that the group believes in maintaining the integrity of examinations at all levels "It is the right way to produce total and globally competitive students for further studies and the world of work in the future,” he added.

He said that schools where quality teaching and learning does not take place have a strong tendency to compromise standards, especially in exams.

According to Obalakun, LEAMSP has zero tolerance for misconduct in exams and other untoward behavior among member schools, both at primary and secondary levels.

He claimed that although there were instances of misconduct in examinations at one of the LEAMSP member schools, the situation had been reduced to almost zero among them, as severe penalties awaited any school deemed guilty.

He said that is why the group has formed its own examination body known as LEAMSP Examination Council (LEC) to, among other things, serve as a mock examination body for students from schools members and other student volunteers from other private and public schools across the country.

He said the exam body established in 2004 had been very helpful in this regard, adding that the board had moved from a paper and pen exam format to a computer-based exam format since 2017.

Giving a talk at the event, guest speaker from Federal College of Education (Technical) Yaba, Lagos, Monsurat Mosaku said that students should always be measured not only by their academic performance but also by their moral values.

She said, "Preparing students to be agents of positive change in society, even from now on, is all-encompassing and goes beyond just scoring high marks on exams."

She therefore commended the leadership of LEAMSP for frequently updating the knowledge and skills of its members, which would in turn improve their performance in their critical roles of producing future leaders.

She advised them not to stray from the path they are on, saying the benefits transcend the education sector.
