Oyo/Osun Customs Intercept Cars and Smuggled Goods and Generate N46 Billion Revenue in Seven Months

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) Oyo/Osun Region Command has made 126 seizures of contraband goods in the last seven months.

Area Comptroller Comptroller Babajide Jaiyeoba made this known Wednesday during a press briefing held at the Command Headquarters, Customs Building in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Seized items included foreign parboiled rice, Tokunbo vehicles, second-hand clothes, bags and shoes, Premium Motor Spirit (gasoline), used tires, dried donkey skin, cannabis and vehicles used to transport the contraband goods.

The Comptroller estimated the total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the seized goods at N192,182,652 million.

He counted the seized goods as 4,217 50 kg bags of parboiled rice, 914 25 liter drums of gasoline, 40 bullets and five bags of used clothes, 17 Tokunbo vehicles, 167 used tires, 13 bags of used bags, one bag of used shoes, 69 bags of dry donkey skin and 80 (42 kg) cannabis wraps.

He said bags of dried donkey skin had been handed over to the Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Service along with two suspects and a conveyance for further action pending approval to hand over the seized cannabis to the National Drug Control Agency.

Jaiyeoba revealed that donkeys are an endangered species and their trade contravenes appendix 6 of the ETCv and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) (flora/fauna ), to which Nigeria is a signatory.

Comptroller Jaiyeoba also said that during the reporting period from May to November, the Area Command generated N46,431,321,578.65 billion in revenue.

The Comptroller gave the total revenue generated in November as N65,462,925,412.30 billion when added to that generated between January and April.

Comparing it to that generated in 2021, the area controller said that revenue this year exceeded it with N8,557,947,642.35,000, an increase of 15.04%.

He added that the Regional Command also exceeded its revenue target for the year with almost N7 billion, an increase of 11.45%.

The Comptroller said this feat was made possible by his command's determination to enforce the provisions of the applicable laws aimed at facilitating legitimate trade.

He welcomed the substantial compliance of excise traders operating in the command's area of ​​responsibility, as he had continued to enforce the provisions of the Finance Act 2022 which placed certain factories under excise control.< /p>

He attributed the achievements of his command to the timely intelligence sharing and collaboration among all customs units in Oyo and Osun States, especially their resilience and vigilance.

He also commended the collaborative efforts of other security agencies including the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police, Department of State Services, NDLEA, Operation Burst, Amotekun and NAQS.

Assuring all stakeholders and legitimate business owners of maximum cooperation to facilitate their trade, Jaiyeoba warned smugglers aiming to sabotage Nigeria's economic development to avoid the territory of command.

He added that the Zone Command would continue to deploy all available resources, in accordance with all applicable laws, to frustrate and bring to justice all offenders.
