Patrick Mahomes and Lionel Messi double winners at the ESPY Awards

2023 ESPY Winners List

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Super Bowl winner Patrick Mahomes and Argentina and soon Inter Miami soccer star Lionel Messi picked up multiple trophies at the 2023 ESPY Awards on Wednesday.

Mahomes, who won the NFL MVP for the second time after leading the Chiefs ahead of the Philadelphia Eagles in this Super Bowl of the Year, was named the NFL's Best Athlete, Men's Sports and Best Player at tonight's ceremony in Los Angeles. Its chiefs won the ESPY for the best team.

Messi won the award for best football player and best league performance, the latter for having led Argentina to their first World Cup championship in December. Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, landed in the United States earlier in the week ahead of his introduction on Sunday as a new member of Major League Soccer's Inter Miami. He is expected to make his debut with the team on July 21.

Other ESPY winners tonight at the ceremony at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood included the USA ski champion Mikaela Shiffrin, who was named Top Athlete, Women's Sports; L.A. Lakers star LeBron James, honored for best record performance for surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's all-time NBA record; and Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani named MLB's Most Outstanding Player.

Honorary awards were presented to Chicago White Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks (the Jimmy V Award for perseverance) and in the United States. Women's Football Team (Arthur Ashe Award for Courage). The Buffalo Bills coaching staff, who saved the life of Damar Hamlin of the Bills after he suffered a heart attack during a game, received the Pat Tillman Award for Service.
